A National Hero

Every nation needs a hero. Someone you can count on, someone that can be a role model for you and the country. There are many people that I could consider a National Hero. One in particular would be Odysseus from the Odyssey. I would endorse Odysseus as a National Hero because he is strong, brave, and kind.

First, Odysseus is strong. When he is all alone out in the ocean and Poseiden starts a huge storm, he is strong because he doesn't give up. He holds on the entire homes and refuses to let go. (V,162) This is why I think Odysseus is strong.


Secondly, I believe Odysseus is brave. When he is batteling with the cyclopes, he is brave because he tells the cyclopes a lie about his name. Even though there was a chance that the cyclopes woulnd't believe it, he took the chance anyways. (iX, 212) This is why I believe that Odysseus is brave.


Lastly, Odysseus is kind. Odysseus shows kindness when he tells his men not to join him on his journey. He tells them this because he fears their safety and thinks it would be more beneficial if they were to just stay put where they were. (X, 232) This is why I think that Odysseus is kind.

I would endorse Odysseus as a National Hero because he is strong, brave, and kind. Odysseus is a very important character in the Odyssey. He is very envolved with most events that occur. He also is very significant because he is the maker of most decisions and plans. He is someone you can always count on and trust. This is why I would choose Odysseus as a National Hero.

Bella descided one day that it would be fun to go cliff jumping. She was supposed to go with Jacob, but at the left minute he cancelled. Since she didn't want to be alone another day, she descided to go alone. When she hit the water though, the waves grabbed her and she began to drown. fortunately, Jacob saved her just in time.
When she arrived home that afternoon, there was a surprise waiting for her. Alice. She had come to stay since she had seen her fall. Jacob came over later that day and told them some very bad news. A local friend of Charlie and Billy's had died. They were going to be going to the funeral later that afternoon. Jacob had to leave immediatley though because he couldn't stand to be in the same room with a vampire.
When Charlie had left to go to the funeral, Jacob came over since Alice had left for a short while. While they were talking, the phone rang. Jacob answered. He said the person on the other line had asked for Charlie and was wondering where her was. Jacob said he was at the funeral, and that was it. Suddenly, Alice appeared with a frantic look on her face. "What did they say?" she asked. Jacob answered, "they asked where Charlie was, and I told them that he was at the funeral. I think it was Dr.Charlise Cullen." This mad Alice even angerer. "NO! That was Edward! He thinks that Bella is dead because he doesn't know that Bella lived after jumping off the cliff! And now that you have told him that Charlie is at the funeral, he thinks that Bella actually is dead!" she replied. Alice then told Bella that they had to go after Edward immediatley.
They caught the next flight to Italy, for that is the only place where Edward could tell the Volturi, the only people that can kill vampires, were to be. They got there just in time, got a fast car, and drove as fast as possible.
When Alice and Bella arrived in the city of Volturi, there was a festival going on. Alice told Bella that fortunately, since she could see the furture, that she saw that the Volturi had said no to Edward's request to die. She also told her though, that he was going to step into the sun instead. This frightened Bella. Alice said he was to step into the sun at noon. When they had finally gotten fulley into the city, Alice told Bella to run as fast as she could to the clock tower where Edward would be. She did as she was told and fortuantely got to Edward just in time to push him out of the was of the light. Edward kissed Bella on the fore head, and then they just stood there for a long moment, so they could embrace the time that they had together now. Bella said it felt as though the hole in her stomach was never there. She was so happy to just be with her Edward again.

After 2 weeks without communicating with Jacob, Bella finally got up the courage to drive down to La Push and see what this was all about. When she arrived, the house seemed dark. She decided to wait until Billy or Jacob would come outside. Hardly any time had passed before she was startled by Jacob. "What are you doing here, Bella?" he asked. "Can we walk?" Bella replied.

Within moments, Bella and Jacob were walking together throught the woods. Bella asked Jacob why he hadn't been calling her, and all he said was that he had been busy hanging out with his new friends, one of them was the kid, Sam, who Jacob had gone on before that was crazy and terribley mean. Bella wondered why he would be hanging around with him and his friends then. This made Jacob furious. He told Bella that he was not safe for her and that he didn't want to be friends with her anymore. With that, Jacob took off and left Bella alone in the woods.

That night, Bella awoke to Jacob climbing into her window. She was not happy about this. He apoligized about earlier that day and tried to calm her down so that he could explain. He reminded her of the talk that they had had up at the lake about a year ago...the talk in which Bella figued out that her precious, Edward was a vampire. But vampires was not ALL they talked about. Jacob had mentioned something about werewolves too. Jacob then told her to think of the reason why he wasn't safe for her to be hanging around with anymore. He told her that he didn't think it would take her very long, and that when she did figure it out, that it was ok to call him instead of coming over. Jacob then left Bella, leaving her still sitting upon her bed.

Jacob was right, it didn't take Bella very long to figure out the reason. "WEREWOLF." Bella muttered. She couldn't belive what she had just said. Her best friend--a WEREWOLF? How can this be? Bella had to find this out.

The following morning, Bella was out the door before Charlie had even left. She drove to La Push faster than usual. She meet up with Billy when she arrived and then went into Jacobs room to talk with him. Instead of speaking in his room, they went back into Bella's car and decided to drive to the place where they had riden there motorcycles.

On the way up, Jacob told Bella everything. He told her that when she had seen Laurent in the woods that day, the reason that Laurent ran away from her was because he had seen Jacob and his pack coming after him. He also told Bella that they had successfully killed Laurent.

"But what about Victoria?" Bella asked. Victoria was James mate. Laurent had told Bella that Victoria only thought it was fair if Bella were to die. Edward killed her sweetheart, James, and in return, Victoria was going to kill Bella. Mate for Mate. She had thought it would be easier for Laurent to kill Bella than herself, though.

This scared Bella. Since Laurent is dead now, Victoria would be coming to get her. Jacob told her not to worry and that he and his pack would take care of it. Bella told Jacob to be careful though, for Charlie was to be out in the woods that day investigating a supposed Bear sighting. Jacob reassured Bella that he would, as they pulled into the infamous motorcylce spot. There, they were to meet up with Sam and the rest of the pack.

New Moon is the second in the Twilight series. In the beginign of the book, it is Bella's birthday and she is invited over to the Cullens home for a party. When Bella is opening one of her presents though, she gets a paper cut and a little blood is shead. Since Jasper is the newest to the family and has had the worst time controlling himself, he immediatley jumps at her. Fortunately, Edward was able to block Bella just in time before Jasper could have bitten her.

The next few days were rough. Edward was in a strang mood and Bella could not seem to figure it out. Sge would try to talk to him, but he just wouldnt say anything. Finally, one day after school, Edward asks if he and Bella can go for a walk. There he tells her that he and his family are leaving Forks, for her safety in particualr. Bella is left standing in the woods. Awe struck, she faints and falls uncontious in the woods. Hours pass before she is found by her father, Charlie.

4 months pass. Bella still hasnt gotten over the loss of her beloved, Edward. Though she has recently become better friends with Jacob Black, Billy Black's (Charlie's friend) son. They hung out alot and even fixed up 2 old motor cycles together. Bella is slowly regaining her confidence and hanging out wiith Jacob is distracting her from this hole in her stomach she claims she has.

One night while Jacob and Bella were at the movies, Jacob began to not feel so well. Bella took him home right away. After he hadnt called the next day to reassure her that he was ok, she began to worry. She called Jacob's house several times for the next few days until finally Billy answered but only told her that Jacob had mono and was unable to talk.

Heroes in a Box--Women Heroes

There are many different types of heroes: Canadian heroes, African-American heroes, Gay heroes, even Edina heroes. One type of hero that I studied in particular was Women heroes. Over the years, women have majorly impacted the world in various ways. For example, many of these women used their talents and special skills to make a difference. Often times, some of these special ladies became the first of their kind to do something. Another example is many of the women became inspirations to other women. Some fought to live. Others made a difference on how women were to live their lives, women’s rights for example. Here are some famous women heroes:

Amelia Earhart

Amelia was very heroic and inspirational. She was the first woman to fly a plane across the Atlantic Ocean. Also, she was the first woman to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross, which distinguishes her in combat in support of operations by "heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight." Other achievements were that Amelia set many records, wrote some best-selling books about her flying experiences, and was a big supporter of the "Ninety-Nines," which was an organization for female pilots. Unfortunately, Earhart disappeared while flying around the globe in early July of 1937. She was declared dead January 5th, 1939.

Eleanor Roosevelt

Eleanor Roosevelt was very heroic to all of us. She was the first lady during the depression and WWII, she had a role as an advocate for civil rights, and she even helped support her husband, Franklin D. Roosevelt, in his "New Deal" plan. After FDR's death, she continued to support and promoted the New Deal. Also, she was majorly involved in the help to get women working. In the 1940's, Roosevelt helped found the Freedom House and supported the United Nations. Eleanor had many other acknowledgements and achievements that she was awarded and recognized for.

Anne Frank

Anne was a hero is many ways. She lived through the Holocaust and wrote about it in a diary, which was later dicovered and published. Anne is a hero to people today because she always looked to the bright side. Even when things were hard, she would try to make the best of the situtations. When she and her family were hiding in a small room above her father's office buliding, she constantly wrote that she was confident that she would one day get out of there alive. Unfortunately, Anne and her family were found after two years of being in hiding. They were all taken to concentration camps. Anne died only a few days before she would have been released and be free after all.

Conclusion

As I have studied women heroes, I have found that women are very strong and really have made a difference. The women I studied made that clear. These three women are heroes to me because they really made an impact on our world and lives today. Eleanor Roosevelt was always supportive 110%; Amelia Earhart took chances and never gave up. Anne Frank believed in herself and never doubted herself for one minute. They have shown me that because of them, I too could make a difference, or I too should always believe in myself.

Article response

On November 5th, 1999, 16 year-old Erik Ramsey and a friend went to see the new movie "The Sixth Sense." On the way home, a minivan tried to make a U-turn from the oncoming lane that Erik was on. Erik's friend driving the car was speeding, and they never saw the other car's headlights. Suddenly, the two cars collided, sending the minivan's engine flying out of its chassis. The car Erik and his friend were in, a late model-Camaro, smashed into the curb and flipped over landing upside down on a smal grove of pine trees. Erik's friend escaped with a chunk of metal in his skull. Firefighters stuggled to remove erik from the car.

Erik was taken to the hospital. He was severely injured in many places. He was in the hospital for days. Doctors claimed at first that he was parallized, but after many tests, the doctors found a blood clot in Erik's brain. He was diagnosted with a rare desised called "Locked-in Syndrome."

Dr.Philip Kennedy immediatley came into the picture. He worked in the field of brain-computer interference reasearch. He helped Erik by asking him questions (for he could still hear) that made him think. While being questionned Kennedy set up a monitor connected to his brain. When Erik would think something, it would be heard over a loud speaker.

Erik learned to use this and since he was able to move his eyes up and down, he was able to communicate somewhat that was as well. Eyes up for "yes," eyes down for "no."

Erik's father Eddie majorly contributed to help Erik. He even had their home remodeled so it would fit his Erik's life style. Everyday, Eddie had to do multiple things to help Erik, for example: certain exercises to make Erik's muscles not tense up.

Erik also started to use a letter chart. The doctors found he had a little use of his hand, so they used a letter chart of the computer to help he communicate by spelling out small words.

Unfortuantely, in 2004, Erik came down with a case of pneumonia that sent his back to hospital. When he finally recovered, he somehow had changed. He became much slower than before and he was unable to use the letter chart. He was going to have re-learn how to use it.

Erik eventually found ways to communicate with his family again. Through his eyes mostly. It must have been really hard for Erik's family and friends to have to communicate with his like this. I would never want to have to go through something so heart-breaking. In the end, Erik still in incapable to do anything on his own. Maybe one day, but for now, he just as to wait.

OR Twilight post 4

The next day was the day that Bella and Edward were to go to Seattle together. When Bella got in the car that morning though, Edward told her he was going to take her somewhere special instead. They drove in Bella's car up to a woodsey place in northern Washington. It was truley beautiful. Edward and Bella hiked all the way to this special place Edward had been talking about--it took them almost 3 hours!

When they finally got to the top, Edward took a seat under a shaded tree while Bella went out into the sunlight. She lay down and took in the nice air. Edward eventually came up next to her. They began to talk.

Bella questioned Edward, and Edward questioned Bella. You could say that they learned alot about eachother that day. Bella questioned Edwards life, and how he became a vampire. He stated that in 1918, he became ill and Carlise (his father figure) saved him, and thats why he is what he is today. Edward on the other hand, questioned Bella about her life back in Arizona--mainly about her mom and her schooling there.

They day came to a close fast. It was nearly dusk by the time they realized that they had been there all day. Bella didnt dreaded walking back again, so Edward decided he would show her how he gets places fast. He told Bella to get upon his back and to hold on tight. He then starting running very fast. They were back at Bella's car in less thatn 2 minutes.

As they drove home, they continued to ask eachother questions. Edward admitted that it at first was hard for him to not want to loose control of himself when he was around Bella, but that he has finaly overcome that challenge. When they got back to Bella's house, Bella invited Edward in. Charlie still hadnt come home from fishing yet.

When Charlie did finnaly arrive though, Edward quickly vanished, leaving Bella alone in her kitchen. Bella knew he didnt actually leave though, so she said a quick hello and goodbye to her father and she darted up the stairs to "get ready and go to bed." She took a fast shower and then ran back into her room to find Edward lying on her Bed.

Edward stayed with her that night. He slept right beside her. Before she fell asleep, she told Bella that she never wanted to be apart from Edward again. Edward agreed. From then on, Edward would stay with Bella everyday and night.
